Audio Unit not showing in AU lab effects but listed by auval -a

Yep, that's whats happening, everything is in the title. The unit is of type 'aufx' and it passes auval -v tests.

This is on Mavericks OSX 10.9.4 / XCode 5.1.1 

I also compile it as a VST and it appears as such in my DAW (Bitwig, doesn't support AUs)

Any idea how I can fix that? Thanks a lot in advance!

64bit vs 32bit problem?  Are you building a dual architecture binary...?
