Hi, when turning fx on and off in a chain, is it good practice to fade the effect out or in for smoothness, or is this overkill?
thx

important in mastering effects where a/b compares need no distractions because the difference between dry and wet is so small
I don’t think fade out would help much. However, when you turn it on, you may let it process the samples for a short time period before actually switching it on. I find it useful for the filter solo in equalizer.
I’ve often combined the on/off switch with the mix control (if the effect has one) and then done a quick linear interpolated cross fade between the wet/dry signals.
If the cross fade isn’t active AND the effect is OFF then you can skip the actual processing.
Bit fiddly but did work well on the whole for most FX.
