As we all know, it’s not easy to market and sell audio plugins.

On top of developing the audio plugin, many devs have to develop a site and backend to showcase their products, handle payments, calculate taxes, and send the download link and activation keys. That time and money could be better applied toward developing user features on the plugin.

While platforms like Shopify (and many others) make it easier to sell anything online, selling audio plugins isn’t that straightforward.

I’m gauging if there’s a need for a Shopify app that makes it easier to sell and download your audio plugins. The app helps you list it on your site, handle VAT/taxes, and after costumer purchase, automatically fulfill your order by emailing your customer activation keys and a link to download your audio plugin.

If that’s something that interests you, or you think the idea sucks, let me know below.

I have an audio plugin store running on Shopify with an app called SkyPilot for digital delivery. This works fairly seamlessly without me having to write any code outside of the plugins themselves. Shopify has international tax features built in, but I’m not sure how comprehensive these are.

The main missing piece, in my view, is a Shopify plugin to allow custom unlock code generation and delivery at the point of sale. There are plugins that will make up random codes for you, or deliver pre-generated codes. But apparently nothing that lets you specify your own code-gen function that automatically takes customer/order info as an input.

Interesting.. Do you have to manually generate codes for each customer?

I had in mind a simple DRM scheme where I would do that - in order to avoid having a server that could go down.
For lack of a no-code solution, I am currently DRM free.

I’ve been using [Moonbase.sh](https://moonbase.sh) for [timeoff.audio](https://timeoff.audio) and they’re a great end-to-end solution (storefront, vouchers, customer accounts, hosting installers, online/offline copy protection, the whole thing).

If one day I wanted to move elsewhere, I would probably probably only move the ecommerce bits to Shopify, and leave the licensing/CRM bits in Moonbase, by syncing the backends with an app [built with Gadget](https://gadget.dev/use-cases/shopify-app-development).

There’s probably a million different ways to go about this though 🙂

Thanks for the mention @moe !

Yeah, we have some merchants issuing Moonbase licenses from Shopify already, either using voucher codes to link the two, or using [Shopify Flow](https://apps.shopify.com/flow) to automate product fulfillment. With this in place, it’s easy to get a fully automated flow, including customer log-ins with license management on your Shopify store - without having to pay for like 3 different Shopify apps, hoping they all work together.

Another option is to keep Shopify as the storefront and use its webhook to create the licence for the buyer’s email, I believe this is a better UX in comparison with serial keys flow.

I am building Inlay, which handles that side and has a JUCE module. If it’s still relevant to u or anyone else I can share details

did you end up using SHopify still? I used to use Shopify because it was basically the most well known ecom platform online. But I couldn’t keep paying their monthly fees + they don’t have native features to properly sell plugins and license generations and all. I ended up switching to Payhip. They’re a free platform model and take 5% from each sale, and the plus side is the platform is more geared towards selling plugins (or more specifically digital products in general). There is a license code upload feature + public api + automatic delivery + automatic sales tax/vat handling, amongst many other things that I like. There’s definitely room to improve on the license api side, but it’s sufficient for my set up so far and it’s dirt cheap!

Payhip indeed looks promising. Does it acts like a Merchant of Record (MoR)? I’m asking because from my experience the most of plugin sellers don’t want to deal with VAT.

yup they do handle everything from collecting to remitting to each of the appropriate government bodies, so it’s a very handsoff process for me. If you yourself and your customers are in the US, Canada, UK and all countries in the EU region, you’re basically covered. That’s basically covers all my customer base anyway, so that’s sufficient for me.

But if you’re selling somewhere like countries in Asia, or elsewhere other than those regions, you’d have to use their system to set up the sales tax rates yourself and remit to the appropriate tax authorities (or maybe check if you’re allowed to sell without collecting sales taxes because there are usually rules for not having to charges taxes when your sales volume is super low in those specific countries). Don’t quote me on this one, best to consult with your accountant/tax person. But for US, CA, UK, EU - I’m all good - I’ve already confirmed with my accountant on that

If you need a better licensing, you can consider Inlay (inlay.cloud). I recently added Payhip integration, so Inlay licences are created automatically whenever someone makes a purchaise through your Payhip store. Users no longer need to deal with license keys, they only need to verify their email once on activation. This flow also protects from unauthorised sharing, unlike regular keys
