What are others doing, with the OpenGL depreciation on MacOS?

I’m wondering about other peoples approaches to tackling the OpenGL deprecation on MacOS for future proofing themselves. I am currently in the middle of having to consider all my options around this, and I’d like to know what others have done/ thought about to solve before diving in.

The visualisation that I’m working on is a 3D projection, and I can think of three ways of handling this:

  • Use WebGL with a web view.
  • Port the visualisation to metal for MacOS.
  • Rewrite the visualisation with paths (Flattening it to 2D or looking at 3D representation with paths)

Is there updated information about when they will actually remove support for OpenGL? It has been deprecated for something like 6+ years.

No new information. I’m just looking to know what others have done, as I don’t know if continuing to work with Open GL on Mac is the right approach for new projects.

I am still full on with OpenGL, also with new projects. It is unlikely that they really cut it down in the very near future, too much software is still using it. With the deprecation they mainly signaled that there will be no version beyond 4.1.

But when the day finally comes, we will be forced to use Metal. As simple as that. And it will most likely come with a new macOS version, so there will be some time to adapt.
