Announcing ADC 2020

(More information is available on the ADC website: https://audio.dev/)

We are delighted to invite you to attend and contribute to the 6th Audio Developer Conference (ADC).

The main conference will take place 18-19 November 2020, with additional pre-conference workshops to be confirmed.

ADC is an annual event celebrating all audio development technologies, from music applications and game audio to audio processing and embedded systems. ADC’s mission is to help attendees acquire and develop new skills, and build a network that will support their career development. It is also aimed at showcasing academic research and facilitating collaborations between research and industry.

New online format

The current situation with COVID-19 means that our usual physical conference in London is not viable this year. For ADC 2020 we are moving to a new online format.

Of course, a major part of the conference experience is the live interaction between attendees. We have considered different ways of recreating this experience online, and have settled on a fairly new system called Remo.

What we love about Remo is that it’s the closest thing we’ve found to recreating the experience of being at a physical event. It is organised around virtual “rooms” and “tables”. In between presentations (or even during if you’re in another room) you can engage in face-to-face video chats with groups of others at your table, or choose a different table and collection of people to interact with. During a presentation, you can ask questions via a dedicated Q&A interface (so the presenter can respond when they are able), and even up-vote questions from other people.

Remo has been used for other recent tech conferences and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. We’re really excited about providing this interactive conference experience for the ADC community!

Sessions will take place between 15:00 and 21:00 UTC to facilitate attendance across different time zones.

What we’re looking for

We invite anyone from the audio developer community – from students to industry experts – to contribute to the Audio Developer Conference by submitting a talk proposal.

We want to draw on as diverse a range of contributors as possible - the less your voice is usually heard, the more valuable it can be! So we’d also like to make especially clear that people from all backgrounds are very welcome, and we will do whatever we can to actively support you. If you have any questions or concerns about this, always feel free to contact us at info@audio.dev.

Talks at ADC range from audio research, to professional practices, to standards in audio development, as well talks about application areas and career development. Experimental projects are welcome. We are seeking a balance between deeply technical talks aimed at experts as well as more accessible talks that may be of interest to students and new developers.

Topics include, but are not limited, to:

  • Digital Signal Processing
  • Audio synthesis and analysis
  • Music technology, DAWs, audio plug-ins
  • Game audio
  • 3D and VR/AR audio
  • Creative coding
  • Other applications of audio programming (e.g. telecommunications, multimedia, medicine, biology)
  • Design and evaluation of audio software and hardware systems
  • Programming languages used for audio development (e.g. C++, Rust, Python)
  • Software development tools, techniques, and processes
  • Performance, optimisation, and parallelisation
  • Audio development on mobile platforms
  • Embedded, Linux, and bare metal audio programming
  • Low-latency and real-time programming
  • Best practices in audio programming
  • Testing and QA
  • Educational approaches and tools for audio and DSP programming
  • Planning and navigating a career as an audio developer
  • Other relevant topics likely to be of interest to the ADC audience

Submit your talk

The deadline for submitting talk proposals is Monday 14 September 2020, 23:59:59 UTC .

Due to the new online format, we have simplified the conference schedule. All talks will be 50 minutes including Q&A , and there will be no poster session this year.

You can either live stream your whole talk including Q&A from home via screen share, or pre-record your talk and only do the Q&A live – whatever is more comfortable for you! In any case, the ADC team will be helping you with all the necessary tech setup to make sure everything works smoothly.

We are still considering the best format for workshops . If you are interested in submitting one, please sign up to the mailing list to be kept up to date with the latest news.

We would like ADC to be a conference for the community by the community. Therefore, this year we are making major changes to how the conference programme is being put together. Instead of a pre-selected programme committee reviewing all the submissions, voting on the submitted talks will be opened up to the whole community . The submissions will also be anonymised to make the voting process fairer and reduce unconscious bias.

For this purpose, we have introduced a new online platform for talk submissions and reviews. When we kick off the voting phase for ADC 2020, we’ll publish more details about how you can participate in the talk selection using the new platform.

You can submit your talk now using the ADC Submissions Portal: https://submit.audio.dev
