FR: Update ProJucer Icon to Big Sur Style

Summary

Update the ProJucer application icon to align with the modern Big Sur design aesthetic, improving visual consistency with the current macOS interface.

Current Issue

The existing ProJucer icon appears outdated, resembling a design from around 2007. This inconsistency with the current macOS style may negatively impact user perception and the overall professional appearance of the JUCE toolkit.

Proposed Solution

Create a new icon for ProJucer that adheres to the Big Sur design guidelines, featuring:

  • A simpler, flatter design
  • Soft shadows and subtle gradients
  • Rounded square shape (squircle)
  • Consistent color palette with the JUCE brand

Benefits

  1. improved visual integration with macOS Big Sur and later versions
  2. Enhanced professional appearance of the JUCE toolkit
  3. Better user experience for developers using ProJucer
  4. Demonstrates JUCE’s commitment to staying current with platform design trends

Additional Information

I’ve attached an example icon file to this request to illustrate the desired style and serve as inspiration for the new design.

The icon could be a tad smaller to be similar in size to the other icons in the dock, but I don’t see any benefit in sticking it inside a rounded rectangle. (Personally I find the “new” macOS icon style a regression.)

Note: You can assign a custom icon to Projucer.app from the Get Info panel. I do this for apps with truly horrible icons.

The Big Sur style is the current standard. Calling it a “regression” shows being stuck in the past. Size and shape aren’t optional - they’re required for consistency and your workaround misses the point entirely. This update is about professional polish, not personal preference.

I can see how this might be useful for consistency. I don’t see how size and shape aren’t optional.

There are so many apps that don’t bother with these guidelines, eg.

When every single app icon has a kind of homogeneous look it’s actually detrimental to UX (imo, but what do I know other than being a user).

ps. I don’t know why I still have Spotify installed, I jumped ship to Tidal after too many crappy behaviours from them.

And then there are people like me, who didn’t upgrade to Sonoma, so a new icon would look like the outlier to me.

I don’t care if it is upgraded or not, just wanted to point out that 100% consistency is not doable anyway.

Not everything from the past is bad. Ultimately we’re arguing about taste and fashion. You’re right that the JUCE icon is not using the current icon design fashion as decided on by Apple. I’m just saying that I don’t mind.

Let’s discuss how to write Projucer
