One reason movies look rather smooth at 24 fps is because of motion blur. Relatively low shutter speeds are normally used, so moving objects are always slightly blurred. When higher shutter speeds are used, the effect is very obvious. Everything look sharp but choppy. It is an effect commonly used for battle scenes.

Adding some motion blur to the playhead could be a nice improvement. Ideally, the amount of blur would depend on the speed at which the playhead is moved.
