Proactive Measures To Prevent Inno Setup Installer From Getting Flagged By Windows Defender

Ask ChatGPT: “In an MSI installer script how can I recursively delete a folder”

The response will also offer to help you do the same in WIX

There are tools like this one (untested) that are meant to convert Inno Setup exe to MSI packages. Could this potentially mitigate the problem?

I’m pretty settled with my Innosetup scripts to build an installer for windows .exe, but I’m curious why you guys would move to MSI? I found that as long as the contents are signed as well as the package .exe itself, things don’t get treated suspiciously that much - but does MSI have some sort of ‘cred’ in the Windows world that elevates it somehow?

We’re also proactively upload each release to some virus scanner companies.
Similar to notarizing minor the stapling, the installer is uploaded and they add it to their databases.

A single customer reporting an issue with a 3rd party product is enough for you to decide to change something? Doesn’t that seem premature?

Yes, I do. A virus alert damages reputation and trust. The installer is the first impression a user has. Not every computer user is an expert. Some probably don’t install when they get a virus message or even a warning.

When you get one report, you may have 1000 others with the same problem. Most users don’t have the time or energy to report bugs to companies.

I heard about it but found it too complicated. Maybe have another look at this.
