Hi everyone,
A year ago, I graduated with a degree in Acoustic Engineering. I’ve since gained a year of experience as a C++ developer, though my current role isn’t related to sound or acoustics. I’m really passionate about becoming an audio programmer, as I enjoyed creating and implementing my own plugins during my studies.
I’ve recently started looking for job opportunities in audio programming, but the search hasn’t been going as well as I’d hoped. It seems there aren’t many companies or job openings in this field to choose from, which makes the process even more challenging.
I’d greatly appreciate any advice or tips from experienced audio programmers, especially those who have been in a similar situation. Any guidance on how to transition into professional audio programming would be incredibly valuable.
Thanks in advance!
Best regards,
Barto
Like many industries, who you know is much more important than what you know. Jobs are few and far between so get to know people and get your name out there.
Good luck (I’m sorry to say you’re going to need it)
The Audio Developer Conference can be a good place to meet developers whom may have advice or a need for some engineering support (or a job opening), this runs every November.
Many devs start out by making their own company (or at least have a website offering some interesting plugins), often it’s as a side-hustle until it takes off or they catch the right opportunity. The plugins you made during your studies might be a good basis for that, or at the very least will provide you with a portfolio to present and discuss when applying for jobs.
Thanks for all the advice, everyone!
I also want to mention that I really enjoy being creative in my work. I’ve been considering a role as an audio programmer in the game development industry. I’ve found some job opportunities that sound exciting, especially those that involve working with the audio team to design, implement, and optimize audio systems and features in games. After being a professional C++ developer in a less interesting (transport) industry, I feel the need to connect my programming skills with something more engaging, like music, which is my passion. I believe this will help me feel more fulfilled and happy in my career!
All the best!
Barto
You should post an offer for services in the Jobs section of this JUCE forum, clearly specifying your level & availability. Many companies could use your help if you can provide good results.
One tip, if your degree did not include any electrical engineering get familiar with that for dsp. Making physical models is intense but a highly desired skill. Read all you can on dsp, Fourier transforms etc… get familiar with the software Spice or similar and add that to your resume. Finally build a physical model of anything, a piece of audio equipment, an amplifier or even an instrument. Getting familiar with faust probably wouldn’t hurt either in the physical modeling world. And good luck!! Build it and they will come.
